A dirt path, worn by decades of striding feet leads Daniel toward his family’s home in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. He is returning for the school holidays, but you’d never guess it.
He looks older than the other students; his face and hands more worn, his eyes more knowledgeable. A smile of wonder stretches across his face as he passes what to any passing stranger would seem a humble plot of rice.
But this is Daniel’s rice field, and the reason he’s on school holidays at all.
Daniel was raised by poor, subsistence farming parents. They all but lived hand-to-mouth, and as disease, disasters and a changing climate reduced their ability to grow crops, Daniel was forced to drop out of school – they simply couldn’t afford the fees.
London to Athens. Over 4,000 km
The Route from London to Athens
Stage 1 London to Paris 22nd July - 26th July
Joined by 20 other cyclists a support vehicle and a film crew this section of the trip I am really looking forward too. To make it into Paris in time to see the end of the Tour de France. To enjoy four days of touring with a group of people raising money to help children in need will be a great experience.
Only a few hours now before I will fly out to London then just a few more days and ill be meeting all the excited cyclists to begin an adventure to Paris.
This year as last year has had its highs and lows in the lead up to the trip. Booking accomodation, trains, the ferry crossing, the support vans, etc. etc. The list seemed to grow some days faster than I could tick things off.
The money raised for ADRA on the 25000spins London to Paris trip 2010 has gone to the following very worthwhile project and cause.
A tenner (£10) will feed a hungry child in Niger for two months! A meal of millet porridge for breakfast followed by beans and rice for dinner will be live-savers for over 2,000 school children in famine hit Niger. Starting Monday the 23rd of August ADRA-UK, with its local partner ADRA Niger, will feed the most vulnerable of the children educated by ADRA in Niger along with their siblings for a period of two months.
